Schlage Encode Plus
Schlage · Smart locks · Model BE499 · Encode Plus (BE499) · Variant: Camelot and Century trims · Markets: US
Schlage's Home Key deadbolt as five groups reviewed it: tap-to-unlock convenience Apple owners praise, a bulky interior, a high price, no Matter support and no independent break-in testing.
Verdict
Five editorial groups reviewed the Encode Plus and agree on the core case: tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock is the most convenient way any of them has opened a smart-locked door, and installation is a short screwdriver job. Only one group, The Verge, published a score (8/10), so no dispersion can be calculated and the assessment rests on one group. Three groups say the lock loses its point without Home Key: no geofencing, the Schlage app for everything else, and the same $299 price. Reviewers also call the interior bulky and the price high, and none ran a destructive test.
Why low confidence: 5 independent editorial groups. Most qualifying reviews are older than 18 months. Open alerts indicate the evidence may change soon. Only 1 of 5 independent groups publish a numeric score.

What reviewers agree on
- Apple Home Key · praised by 4 of 5 sources
Which sources said this
- 9to5Mac — positive: Calls it the first consumer lock in the US with Apple Home Key and now his favourite smart lock: tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch locks or unlocks the door.
- MacRumors — mixed: Home Key worked and Express Mode covers a dead iPhone, but the iPhone or Apple Watch had to be held very close before the lock registered, so the keypad was often quicker.
- Reviewed — positive: Home Key unlocks within an inch or two of the keypad and keeps working for about five hours after the iPhone battery dies.
- The Verge — positive: Home Key unlocks without opening an app or waking the phone, Express Mode removes authentication, and the reviewer calls it the simplest smart-lock interaction he has had.
- Tom's Guide — positive: Unlocking with an iPhone or Apple Watch worked within a second, though tapping the whole watch face against the lock is described as a little awkward.
- Connectivity · praised by 3 of 5 sources
Which sources said this
- 9to5Mac — positive: Home Key runs over NFC and keeps working for about five hours after the iPhone dies through Power Reserve; the lock otherwise uses HomeKit.
- The Verge — positive: Connects over the more power-efficient Thread protocol through a HomePod mini or a second-generation Apple TV 4K; otherwise it falls back to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Tom's Guide — positive: Runs on Wi-Fi directly, or pairs with an Apple TV or HomePod mini so the batteries last a little longer than on a direct Wi-Fi connection.
- Installation · praised by 4 of 5 sources
Which sources said this
- MacRumors — positive: Straightforward for anyone who has replaced a deadbolt: the interior unit screws onto a metal plate and the keypad wires are fed through the door.
- Reviewed — positive: Replacing a dumb deadbolt took ten minutes on a standard door using Schlage's instruction guide, with QR-code video walkthroughs for anyone who gets stuck.
- The Verge — positive: About 15 minutes and a Phillips screwdriver; a taper on each side of the deadbolt helped on an older door that does not close squarely.
- Tom's Guide — positive: Hardware installation is a 10 to 15 minute job with a Phillips screwdriver; the phone setup is the more involved part.
Common criticisms
- App and software · criticized by 4 of 5 sources
Which sources said this
- 9to5Mac — negative: The touchscreen keypad and its backlight are lower quality than the Yale Assure SL's, and HomeKit still cannot schedule access codes or show access history.
- MacRumors — negative: The keypad numbers are extremely faint under typical lighting and only illuminate after a key press, which the reviewer calls an easy improvement Schlage has not made in seven years.
- Reviewed — negative: Apple Home on its own is a confusing and limited manager, and an Apple Home user also needs an Apple TV, HomePod mini or iPad hub to keep Wi-Fi control.
- The Verge — mixed: Adding the lock to Apple Home needs no Schlage app at all, but guest codes there cannot be limited to a time block or given an expiry date, and the Schlage app is still needed for Alexa and Google setup.
- Tom's Guide — negative: Setting the lock up through HomeKit first blocks later access to the Schlage Home app, and it stores 100 codes against 250 on the Yale Assure SL.
- Value · criticized by 3 of 5 sources
Which sources said this
- MacRumors — negative: Priced at around $320 at Home Depot and Lowe's, with availability described as spotty.
- Reviewed — negative: It costs more than most and offers a bit less, skipping geofencing and a fingerprint sensor; the reviewer points buyers to the cheaper Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi.
- The Verge — negative: Firmly on the expensive side at $299.99 when capable smart locks can be found well under $200.

What buyers report
What creators showed
Best for
- Apple households that already own a HomeKit hub. Four of the five groups praised Home Key without reservation, and two note that a HomePod mini or Apple TV is what lets the lock use Thread and spare the batteries.
- Buyers who want a keypad and a physical key as backups. All five reviews describe the touchscreen keypad and the key cylinder, and Schlage's page lists a 100-code capacity for guests.
- Anyone replacing an existing deadbolt on a standard door. Four of the five groups installed it in 10 to 15 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver, and Tom's Guide and The Verge both note the bolt's taper helps on doors that do not line up perfectly.
Skip it if
- You want Matter. Schlage's support pages state the Encode Plus is not a Matter-enabled device and does not support Matter, and The Verge reported in November 2022 that it would not be upgraded. The Matter over Thread model in Schlage's range is the Sense Pro.
- You do not carry an iPhone or Apple Watch. Three groups say the lock loses its advantage there: no native geofencing, the Schlage app for setup, code schedules and history, and the same price as the version Apple users get more from.
- You want a small lock or a lower price. MacRumors calls the interior unit much bulkier than the Level Lock+, and The Verge places the lock firmly on the expensive side at $299.99 against competent locks well under $200.
- No independent break-in testing could be read for this lock, so this page makes no claim about resistance to picking, drilling or forced entry. Consumer Reports runs kick-in as sold, reinforced kick-in, drilling and picking tests in its Door Locks programme, but its scores for this model sit behind a paywall that was not bypassed; the five reviews analysed ran no destructive test of any kind.
- Matter support does not exist and never arrived. Schlage's support article of 30 June 2025 states the Encode Plus is not a Matter-enabled device and does not support the protocol, and records that an earlier article claiming Matter support was removed as incorrect. The Verge reported in November 2022 that Schlage had ruled out an upgrade. Third-party pages that still list the Encode Plus as Matter over Thread are wrong on both the feature and the model.
- Thread is a 2022 fact, not a current specification. At launch The Verge described the lock as one of the few supporting both Apple Home Key and Thread, and 9to5Mac's review treats HomeKit as the battery-saving path, but Thread appears on no current Schlage product page and a search of Schlage's own support site for Thread returns the Sense Pro and Arrive, not the Encode Plus.
- The score rests on one group. Only The Verge published a number, 8 out of 10; Tom's Guide, Reviewed, MacRumors and 9to5Mac all wrote verdicts without a score, so there is no dispersion to calculate and no cross-group agreement to measure. Under the quorum rules that puts confidence at low, and this page should be read as a synthesis of five texts rather than of five scores.
- Reviewers who do not use Apple call the lock bulky inside. MacRumors writes that it is still on the bulky side with the cylinder, electronics and four AA batteries in the door, and calls it a much bulkier setup than the Level Lock+; The Verge writes that the interior is larger and blockier than the front. The measured interior unit is 3 in x 5.5 in x 2.2 in against 3 in x 5 in x 0.9 in outside, and Amazon lists the whole lock at 3.4 lb.
- Price is the other consistent complaint. The Verge puts it firmly on the expensive side at $299.99 when capable locks sell below $200, Reviewed writes that it costs more than most and offers a bit less and steers buyers to the cheaper Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi, MacRumors notes it around $320 with spotty availability, and Tom's Guide records $280 at Home Depot against $321 at Walmart.
- Battery life is estimated, not measured across groups. Schlage rates up to six months of typical use on four AA cells; The Verge reports up to a year when the lock is connected over Thread, and 9to5Mac reports nearly a year when it is used only through HomeKit. 9to5Mac also misstates the cells as four AAA batteries, which is wrong: Schlage, Reviewed, MacRumors and Tom's Guide all specify four AA.
- Certification wording does not agree between the manufacturer and a reviewer. Schlage's product pages claim ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2015 Grade AAA in security, durability and finish plus ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 1; Reviewed's specification box lists ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 3. These are manufacturer and reviewer statements about a certificate, not the result of any test read for this page, and the grade gap is unresolved here.
- The five reviews are close together in time and identical in viewpoint. Four were published in 2022 and 2023 (The Verge and 9to5Mac in March 2022, Reviewed in June 2022, MacRumors in February 2023) and only the Tom's Guide page carries a later update, dated 11 February 2024. All five are US publications and all five assess the lock primarily through Apple Home Key, so the non-Apple case rests on the same three texts rather than on independent testing.
- No group is free of a commercial interest. All five rely on affiliate links or are part of affiliate-funded operations; Reviewed was sold by Gannett to StackCommerce, a commerce platform, in 2024; MacRumors states that Schlage/Allegion supplied the review unit, which is why its review is recorded as provided. That does not invalidate the observations, but it is the reason the conflict alert is attached.
- The Buyer Signal is pooled rather than per SKU. Amazon shows the same 4.0 from 1,171 ratings on more than one Encode Plus finish listing, so that figure is not a score for any single model number. Home Depot's separate 4.8 from 3,856 ratings was read on the same day and deliberately not combined with it, because the platforms, samples and incentives differ.
- A successor now sits above this lock. Schlage's Sense Pro is a Matter over Thread deadbolt with ultra-wideband starting at $399, and the Schlage support search surfaces it ahead of the Encode Plus for Thread queries. The Encode Plus remains the Apple Home Key option at a lower price, but it is no longer the top of the line.

How we reached this verdict
5 full professional reviews qualified, representing 5 independent editorial groups, published between Mar 2022 and Feb 2023. Each group counts once and weighs the same; when a group has several titles, their scores are averaged into one. Scores were converted linearly to a 0–100 scale, and the number rests on the 1 groups that publish one; reviews without a score inform the consensus but not the number. Buyer and creator signals are shown separately and are not averaged into the Quorum Score. Research cut-off: Sep 30, 2026. Methodology 1.1. Main limitation: only 1 of 5 independent groups publish a numeric score. Read the methodology.
