Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS
Sony · Camera lenses · Model SEL600F63GM · Compact G Master super-telephoto announced 2026-09-15; not the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS (SEL600F40GM) · Variant: One global variant, model SEL600F63GM (UPC 027242934399), Sony E-mount full frame, 995g without the tripod foot · Markets: US, CA, GB, DE, AU, JP, VN
Sony's 995g 600mm G Master as four complete reviews and three editorial groups saw it: sharp wide open and fast to focus, at the cost of f/6.3 in low light and a US$3,699 price.
Verdict
Reviewers agree the Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS rewrites what a 600mm prime can weigh: Amateur Photographer scores it 5/5 and both Digital Camera World and TechRadar score it 4.5/5, calling it sharp wide open, fast to focus and light enough at 995g - against 3,040g for the f/4 - to carry all day. The disagreement is not about optical quality but about who should buy it. F/6.3 is the price of that weight: reviewers report f/9 with the 1.4x converter and f/13 with the 2x, ISO 2000-3200 in early light, and a US$3,699 list price that sits far above Sony's own 200-600mm zoom. With US retail not opening until October 15, 2026, this is a launch-window verdict built from four complete reviews across three editorial groups.

What reviewers agree on
- Sharpness and resolution · praised by 3 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 'Quite simply, it delivers superb sharpness right across the frame wide open', which the reviewer says lets you crop anywhere in the frame and feeds noise reduction better data.
- TechRadar — positive: TechRadar: 'Detail is very sharp, especially when subjects are relatively close', with only 'the occasional softness' on large mammals at maximum aperture where focus fell slightly off the eye.
- Fotopolis.pl — positive: Fotopolis: 'Obiektyw jest ostry juz od pelnego otworu wzglednego' (sharp from wide open), with frame edges looking similar from f/6.3 to f/11 and chromatic aberration well controlled.
- Autofocus · praised by 3 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 'I found the lens to be super-fast, silent, and consistently accurate at autofocusing', with missed frames blamed on the A7R V body rather than the lens.
- TechRadar — positive: TechRadar: 'autofocus proved swift and reliable' with bird, animal and insect detection, feeling sluggish only when racking from a very close subject to a very distant one.
- Fotopolis.pl — positive: Fotopolis: autofocus is 'bardzo szybki i celny' (very fast and accurate) with 70-90% success depending on subject dynamics, though it lags the 400mm f/4.5 in weaker light.
- Size and weight · praised by 3 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 995g bare, 1,125g with the hood, 1,250g with caps and foot; 'It's also 2kg lighter than the Sony FE 600mm F4 GM OSS' and about half the 200-600mm zoom's weight.
- TechRadar — positive: TechRadar: 995g, with Sony's 400mm f/2.8 and 600mm f/4 primes 'around 3x the weight of its new additions'; the reviewer carried both lenses for hours of hiking in one session.
- Fotopolis.pl — positive: Fotopolis: the lens 'wazy jedynie 995 g' at 108 x 263mm, against 1,390g for the Nikkor Z 600mm f/6.3 and 2,115g for Sony's own FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS.
- Image stabilization · praised by 3 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 'I was able to get sharp images hand-held at shutter speeds down to about 1/60sec', with three OSS modes including one for erratic subjects such as birds in flight.
- TechRadar — positive: TechRadar: the lens 'includes Sony's Optical SteadyShot (OSS) - a key feature when shooting at such extreme focal lengths', with a dedicated stabilisation-mode switch.
- Fotopolis.pl — positive: Fotopolis: 'Nawet przy 1/10 s jestesmy w stanie wykonac z dobra ostroscia wiekszosc zdjec z reki' (at 1/10s most handheld shots are sharp), an average effectiveness of about 4-5 EV.
- Build and weather sealing · praised by 3 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 'it boasts dust and moisture-resistant construction' with seals around every control and a fluorine coating on the front element, though the foot lacks an Arca-Swiss plate.
- TechRadar — positive: TechRadar: 'each lens is dust and moisture resistant, features a rubber ring to seal the lens mount', with five switches, a function ring and four focus-hold buttons.
- Fotopolis.pl — positive: Fotopolis: barrel built from metal and composites with 'solidne uszczelnienia' (solid seals), a smooth focus ring and a removable tripod foot, but no Arca-Swiss grooves or click stops.
- Bokeh and rendering · praised by 2 of 3 sources
Which sources said this
- Amateur Photographer — positive: Amateur Photographer: 'it renders bokeh very nicely, not just in the background, but in front of the focus plane too', which the reviewer used to frame subjects with defocused foreground.
- Digital Camera World — positive: Digital Camera World: 'its combination with a 600mm focal length enables a tight depth of field, along with pleasantly smooth bokeh', helped by the 11-blade circular aperture.

Best for
- Wildlife and bird photographers who walk long distances and shoot handheld. Amateur Photographer, Digital Camera World, TechRadar and Fotopolis all make the 995g weight the defining strength, and Sony moved the centre of gravity back towards the camera.
- Sony shooters who want 600mm G Master quality without the f/4's 3,040g and US$14,099. Amateur Photographer calls it 2kg lighter than the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS and Digital Camera World says it costs about a quarter as much.
- Sports, aviation and small-mammal shooters who work in reasonable light. DPReview's field test kept tracking birds passing behind trees, and Fotopolis measured 70-90% AF hit rates and sharp handheld frames near 1/10s.
- Teleconverter users. Sony's own page and every complete review confirm SEL14TC and SEL20TC support - 840mm f/9 and 1200mm f/13 - with roughly 900mm equivalent available by switching to APS-C crop instead.
Skip it if
- You regularly shoot in low light. f/6.3 is 1.3 stops slower than the 600mm f/4, DPReview's field test shot ISO 2000-3200 in early-morning light, Calumet says ISO climbs faster, and Digital Camera World calls the aperture merely modest.
- You need zoom flexibility. TechRadar, Digital Camera World and Fotopolis all name the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS at US$2,099 as the cheaper, more versatile alternative, and Jared VanderMeer says the prime commits you to one framing.
- You want the cheapest way to 600mm. At US$3,699 it costs US$1,000 more than Sony's own 400mm f/4.5 GM, and Digital Camera World lists being 40% pricier than that sibling as a reason to avoid it.
- You need it in hand this month. Amazon US lists it as releasing on October 15, 2026, Calumet quotes one to three months and Foto Hamer sells it as an order item; no page read showed it in stock at the cut-off.
- Only two independent editorial groups publish a numeric score for this lens - Kelsey Media (Amateur Photographer 5/5) and Future plc (Digital Camera World 4.5/5 and TechRadar 4.5/5) - so the 95/100 Quorum Score rests on two group means, and the fourth complete review, Fotopolis, carries no number at all.
- The lens was not on sale in the US at the research cut-off: Amazon US shows US$3,699.99 with 'This item will be released on October 15, 2026', Calumet lists one to three months, Foto Hamer treats it as an order item, and the only price in stock at a mainstream retailer was not readable because B&H and Adorama returned HTTP 403.
- PetaPixel's review, named in the brief, could not be opened at all: petapixel.com returned HTTP 403 under Chrome, Googlebot and r.jina.ai, so no PetaPixel data appears anywhere in this analysis. The same happened to Sony's US, UK and Croatia pages and to Dustin Abbott's written review (HTTP 307).
- f/6.3 is the central trade-off and every review states it: DPReview shot ISO 2000-3200 in early light and notes the f/4 is 1.3 stops faster, Digital Camera World calls the aperture merely modest, Fotopolis says the lens's speed is the limitation, and Calumet warns ISO rises faster in bad light.
- Value is contested rather than settled. Digital Camera World scores Value 4.5/5 and calls it about a quarter of the 600mm f/4's price, yet lists being 40% pricier than the 400mm f/4.5 and Sigma's 500mm f/5.6 as a reason to avoid, and TechRadar tells zoom-flexible buyers to look at the 400-800mm or 200-600mm instead.
- Regional pricing is inconsistent: US$3,699, GBP 3,299-3,300, EUR 3,899, AUD 5,599, CAD 4,999 and VND 100,990,000 promotional against 110,990,000 list, with a Sony 200 EUR teleconverter bundle discount running to 2026-12-31 - all read on different pages on different days.
- First-party specifications conflict on two points and were left unresolved: Digital Camera World prints a minimum aperture of f/22 while Amateur Photographer prints f/6.3 - f/32, and Digital Camera World gives 108 x 265mm against 108 x 263mm on Sony's own page and in most reviews.
- The weight figure depends entirely on what is attached: Sony's headline 995g excludes the tripod foot, Amateur Photographer measured 1,125g with the hood and 1,250g with caps, hood and foot, DPReview estimates the hood at about 130g, and Fstoppers reports 1,217g with hood and foot.
- Zoom rivals are cheaper and more flexible: Sony's own FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS costs US$2,099 and reaches the same f/6.3 at 600mm, and Jared VanderMeer says the prime's fixed framing is its biggest practical adjustment.
- The buyer sample is almost empty. Amazon US carries no rating for the lens because it is still a preorder, and the only user rating read anywhere was a single 4.7/5 entry on a German retailer listing, so editorial scores cannot be checked against buyer satisfaction.
- One group's score comes from a review of two lenses: TechRadar reviewed the FE 400mm F4.5 GM and FE 600mm F6.3 GM together in one article, so its 4.5/5 is not exclusive to the 600mm, and counting it beside Digital Camera World would double-count Future plc.
- The lens reaches its sharpest per Digital Camera World's lab results only next to its sibling: the 400mm f/4.5 tested a little sharper across the frame, and the 600mm's advantage is reach rather than absolute resolution.

How we reached this verdict
4 full professional reviews qualified, representing 3 independent editorial groups, published in Sep 2026. Each group counts once and weighs the same; when a group has several titles, their scores are averaged into one. Scores were converted linearly to a 0–100 scale, and the number rests on the 2 groups that publish one; reviews without a score inform the consensus but not the number. Buyer and creator signals are shown separately and are not averaged into the Quorum Score. Research cut-off: Oct 9, 2026. Methodology 1.1. Main limitation: only 2 of 3 independent groups publish a numeric score. Read the methodology.

Specifications
A 600mm f/6.3 G Master super-telephoto prime for Sony's full-frame E-mount, announced on 2026-09-15 alongside the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS. Sony quotes 995g without the tripod foot and a 108 x 263mm barrel - the number every reviewer leads with, because the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS it sits beside weighs 3,040g and lists at US$14,099. Optically it is 24 elements in 17 groups with three Super ED and one ED element, Nano AR Coating II and an 11-blade circular aperture, focused by two XD linear motors that Sony rates for tracking at up to 120fps on the a9 III. Optical SteadyShot has three modes and works with the body's stabilisation. The barrel is sealed against dust and moisture with a fluorine-coated front element, and controls include four focus-hold buttons, a function ring, a 7m focus limiter and full-time DMF. It takes the SEL14TC 1.4x (840mm f/9) and SEL20TC 2.0x (1200mm f/13) teleconverters, or roughly 900mm equivalent by switching to APS-C crop. Editors scored it 5/5 and 4.5/5 and all of them flagged the same trade-off: f/6.3 forces higher ISO in poor light, and at US$3,699 it is far more expensive than Sony's own 200-600mm zoom.
